In a small wood shop ticked into a corner of Montana's Gallatin Valley,
skilled craftsmen create clean, elegant designs that are as at home in their
mountain valley as in a Manhattan loft.
HISTORY. Cherry Tree Design was born in a small wood shop in Boulder,
Colorado, when a fine wood craftsman began creating custom shoji screens. Not
wanting to waste any of his precious materials, he began designing Japanes
inspired lighting products from the off-cuts of the shoji screens. Thus the
puzzle-like look of some of the original designs (like the Mt. Fuji). Five
years later, Tyler and Julie Williams bought the company bacause of Tyler's
love for fine woodwork and handcrafted hardwood products and Julie, having
spent some years living in Japan, had a fondness for shoji screens. After
apprenticing with the original craftsman and learning the skills of fine
woodworking, Tyler and Julie moved the company to their native Montana in
1996. As appreciation for finely crafted wood products has increased, the
company has continued to grow and flourish in Bozeman, Montana.
Cherry, walnut, oak, mahogany, and maple - real wood, not stained
imitations - lend the lighting fixtures, screens, and accessories a patina
that mellow with age. And while other furnishings may in time become dated,
the purchase of a Cherry Tree Design product is an investment in a look that
spans generations. The artisans at Cherry Tree Design still work with wood the
old-fashioned way - by hand. Their craftsmanship, from meticulous
tension-fitted joints to oiled, hand-rubbed and lacquered finishes, lend their
products a tangible, human warmth. Screws are minimized since many of Cherry Tree Design's products are constructed almost entirely with precise joints
and traditional wood adhesion materials. The Graceful, flowing lines of their
shoji screens, lighting, and accessories belie their durability, for all are
built to last.

In addition to our shoji, door, and mirror offerings, Cherry Tree Design
offers a large number of standard lighting products. These products cover a
wide range of styles from Asian to Arts & Crafts, and have numerous wood and
shade options that allow you to create a fixture that is perfect for your
needs.
Few lights blend function, form, and art as well as Cherry Tree Design’s
unique lighting products. Many Cherry Tree Design lights are built almost
entirely without nails or screws; each tension joint painstakingly cut and fit
into position.
Cherry, maple, walnut, alder, and oak hardwoods are handpicked for grain and
color and then individual pieces are matched to create a perfectly balanced
final product. Once assembled, a 5 step finishing process is used to magnify
the beauty of the wood and accentuate the unique grain characteristics that
make each lamp a one of a kind.
Cherry Tree Design has built a reputation for accurately capturing the
essence of major design themes. Asian, Rustic, Arts & Crafts, Mission,
Contemporary, and Transitional styles are available in pendants, chandeliers,
ceiling mounts, vanity lighting, and sconces. Along with styling, Cherry Tree
Design utilizes construction methods that were utilized when the style
originated, thereby creating a piece that is true to the style and
manufacturing methods of that time.
Do you want to provide atmosphere over a breakfast bar counter or dining
table? Consider the influence of our three-light chandeliers and pendants. On
a grander scale our five-light chandeliers will enhance an open air foyer or
transform a dining area! For a mundane hall or corridor, add warmth and
character with one of our many sconce or short pendant choices. For the
showcase bathroom or to beautify an otherwise ordinary vanity mirror, a Cherry
Tree Design bath bar light will not disappoint.
If something entirely unique is what you’re after, Cherry Tree Design offers
complete design and engineering services to make your lighting ideas a
reality.
What are shoji screens? ("show-gee")
The beauty of Shoji screens originated in Japan as lightweight, wood framed
panels used primarily as sliding doors or room dividers. Initially, Shoji
contained a grid on one side with a thin paper, which was replaced every
Japanese New Year, glued to the back of the screens.
Cherry Tree Design has enhanced the charm of the original shoji designs with
the utilization of solid American hardwoods and durable, washable facings. Our
Shoji feature double sided grid, which may be removed for cleaning or to
change the facing.
What is the most cost effective and quality-conscious way to build shoji?
Cherry Tree Design has been building and improving upon shoji design for over
ten years and offers the following benefits over "home-built" shoji:
We are familiar with the construction of shoji screens, so we save you and
your contractor time and money by eliminating overrun on construction time and
materials.
Cherry Tree Design has perfected shoji craftsmanship and finishes, providing
you with greater satisfaction in the finished product.
Our design staff has done extensive research in order to provide our customers
with a wide array of facings, grid styles and hardwoods, thereby saving our
customers from doing costly investigative work.
Shoji built by Cherry Tree Design frees the contractor's time and energy to do
what he is best qualified for - overseeing construction.
How does Cherry Tree Design make its screens?
All our products are handcrafted in Bozeman, MT. We hand-select the finest
grade of solid American hardwood - cherry, maple, walnut, oak and mahogany -
for the frames of our shoji screens. These woods are commonly found in the
American home or office and, with their beautiful, natural grain and color,
they offer an artistic element. In addition, we can source other hardwoods
that are specified for a project.
Each piece of wood is selected for its straightness. Once the framework is cut
close to the specified dimensions, it is then machined on special equipment to
the final dimension, thus achieving maximum flatness. These critical steps
allow for the least amount of bowing.
Matching hardwood is then chosen for the grid. Each grid piece is cut and
sanded within 3 thousandths of an inch. Carefully milled pieces slide tightly
into the half lap joints that hold the grid together.
Our shoji screens are carefully hand-sanded to eliminate cross-grain scratches
and achieve a smooth finish. Next, two to three coats of furniture quality
lacquer are applied with more hand sanding between each coat. The result is a
furniture-quality satin finish.
Cherry Tree Design offers an extraordinary variety of durable, beautiful
facings to complement its hardwoods, including vinyl backed papers,
encapsulated papers, fiberglass, and acrylics. Samples of the facings can be
ordered for your review.
Cherry Tree Design's attention to detail and supportive customer service team
has earned us accolades from our customers.

"Shoji, a hallmark of Japanese interior design, goes well with any decor." A
Japanese Touch for your Home, by Koji Yagi.
We have constructed shoji for a variety of uses in many American interiors:
homes, offices, healthcare facilities, yachts, hotels, restaurants, and retail
stores.
Moveable shoji screens are an easy and tasteful way to change the size, look,
and shape of a room. Shoji screens provide solutions for many design problems.
They are perfect for room dividers, window coverings, pocket doors, closet
doors and freestanding screens. In addition, Cherry Tree Design makes hinged
passage doors with the clean look of shoji.
Translucent sliding doors provide an easy and tasteful way to transform the
size and shape of the room without the use of solid walls - allowing for light
to transcend throughout the space.
Our shoji can be made in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, Craftsman, Asian or
Contemporary, depending upon the grid style that you select. Our design staff
can assist you to make certain that your screens match or complement existing
design elements in your home.
Typically your contractor will install the screens. If you are handy, you may
also be able to complete the installation steps. The panels are shipped with
installation instructions and the required mounting hardware. Installing shoji
is similar to putting in sliding closet doors.
